About Italian ponies

By "Italian ponies", collectors mean a series of over 100 ponies (including variants) made and distributed in Italy between 1983 and 1987 by DAG (Distribuzione Associata Giocattoli), under a Hasbro license.

Ponies made and distributed in Italy were quite unique, not only because of features of their own or because several of them were Italian exclusives, but also because they in came in the unique DAG packages designs:

A large quantity of ponies made in Italy were made to be distributed in the European market in particular in the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Austria, France and Scandinavia). However, those Italian ponies that were exported in the rest of Europe were came on regular Hasbro cards, while those that were sold in Italy had their exclusive DAG cards and boxes.

Since 1987 approximately, DAG began to actually import ponies made in Hong Kong, but for some time they were still boxed in Italy in the traditional Italy-exclusive DAG cards or boxes (e.g. the Princess Pony above). Such ponies are made in Hong Kong but have an Italian DAG package, which has often mislead collectors into believing the ponies themselves are made in Italy too.
